About the artist - By Julie Caves, Editor : Jacksons Art Supplies
The painter Joanne Webb came to our attention as she uses paints and gesso panels that she orders from Jackson’s Art. She paints wonderful little panels using gold leaf and oil colour that have a soft-edged, fantastical quality that makes me think of Odilon Redon.
Joanne lives and works in Chichester, West Sussex. In an effort to “transcribe the interconnectedness of it all” she using layers of rich, brilliant colour to reveal layers of gold leaf on Italian gesso panels.
“The world painted by Webb is unobtainable and invisible yet exists along with all the uncomfortable and wondrous feelings, which seep out onto the painterly surface.” Joanne is deeply inspired by the work of surrealist women such as Leonora Carrington and Frida Khalo, with her garden, the West Sussex landscape or a winter tree filled with birds providing as much an inspiration as constellations in the night sky.
